Frequently, I have calls with advisors and they say “I really want to get started on making some changes” and they “really want to do it now” but gosh, there are just do many other things they need to do first.  If I had a nickel for every time I’ve heard this…well, you know.

The truth is, there is never a “good time” or “perfect time” to start making changes and working with a coach or consultant.  It’s a time commitment but here’s a little secret – you will never have more time than you do now.  There are only 24 hours in a day. That is a constant and YOU choose how you will fill up those 24 hours.  You can fill them up the way you do now, or you can choose to fill them up another way.  We all know the definition of insanity. So, how do you figure out what to dump from your 24 hours?

My suggestion would be to time track. Yep, it’s painful at first but once you get used to it i.e., make it a habit, it’s no big deal. Our clients use Toggl ( for some period of time when they start working with us so everyone can get a good understanding of where their time is going.  If you are honest, you will most likely be shocked at what you see. I know I was.  However, it allowed me to zero in on things that sap my energy, are a waste of my time and see what things I could delegate either in house or outsource.

Second, complete the Delegate & Elevate matrix developed by Gino Wickman in his book Traction.  Take a piece of paper and divide it into four squares.  The top left corner is “Love/Great”. These are things you love doing, you’re great at and they give you energy.  The top right corner is “Like/Good”. These are things you like doing and you’re pretty good at them.  Bottom left is “Don’t like/Good”. These are things that sap your energy, you don’t like doing but you’re good at them.  Bottom right is, you guessed it, “Don’t like/Not Good”.  Obviously, these are things you don’t like doing, they drain your energy, you have no passion for and what’s more, you’re not good at them.  You do them because you think no one else can.

Take the results of one month of time tracking and the Delegate and Elevate Matrix and start off-loading.  You should delegate everything in “Don’t like/Good” & Don’t like/Not Good”.  You can delegate it in house (make sure the person you are delegating to has the necessary skill set and passion to take it over) or outsource it.  You will enjoy your business and your life much more when you are focusing on things you are passionate about and you are good at doing.

So, there is never a “good or perfect” time to start working with a coach and completing the above exercises UNLESS you make it a priority and give yourself the bandwidth to do it so why not do it now! Schedule a complimentary, one-hour call with us to talk about any challenges you are facing.
